How much does a bin of clothes weigh?
To start, a regular home laundry basket will hold approximately 10 pounds of dirty laundry as illustrated in the adjacent photo. We zeroed the scale with an empty laundry basket and then added 10 pounds of laundry.
However, as an estimate a 13 gallon trash bag will weigh approximately 12 to 15lbs and a black garden leaf bag from 30 to 40lbs. If you want, get on a scale with and without holding the clothes and the difference should approximate the weight.

You may be able to wash more or you may need to remove some items. As an example, 12 pounds of laundry might look like a load of two bath towels, six T-shirts, and four pairs of jeans. Now you're ready to load the washer and select the appropriate water temperature and cycle.
To give you an idea of how much a typical load weighs, the following items all together weigh about 10 pounds: Seven pairs/sets of underwear. Seven pairs of socks. Five short-sleeve T-shirts.
At TSI, we see two common box sizes and weights for shipments of clothes: A medium-sized box (18” x 18” x 16”) weighing approximately 35 lbs. A large box (24” x 18” x 18”) weighing approximately 50 lbs.
Garbage bags are fantastic for moving fabric-based items like clothing, towels, and linens, since these items don't really need the support of a box. To cut down on work when you're unpacking, fold each item before placing it in the bag.
Washing machine load size chart
Medium/regular load: This works out to a load of approximately 6 pounds. Large load: A large load in a HE machine is approximately 11 pounds. Extra-large load: If you have a HE machine, then an extra-large load at full capacity is around 21 pounds.
Each 10-12 pounds equals approximately one standard load of laundry. Our smallest, 16 lb. machines equal 1 load while our 40 lb. machines can handle approximately 4 loads of laundry at one time.
15 pounds or laundry can include: 3 jeans, 3 pants, 5 shirts, 3 towels, 7 pairs of socks, 4 sweatshirts and 9 pairs of underwear. This is a rough estimate and final weights depend on material and overall weight of each item but should help give you a rough idea.
How much is 50 pounds of clothes?
I will probably take about 12 t shirts, 2 sweatshirts, 1 sweatjacket, 8 prs capris, 3 prs jeans (the legging type of denim), a pair of sandles, 1-2 sundresses, undergarments, socks, toiletries, and a few small misc items.

Salvation Army district manager Tom Canfield estimates three to six items, depending on size, weigh a pound. Three to four shirts, two or three pairs of jeans, or five to six pieces of kids' clothing add up to $1.49 (or one pound).
